There's been a lot of research done on ants but most of the papers are frustratingly behind paywalls despite having been conducted and written by public institutions. Thankfully, a little google-work yielded this:

Which appears to be the papers written by Michael Glancey of the USDA. I haven't checked, but you can probably find most of the USDA papers here:
