Today while hiking in the blue mountains I found a red wasp hibernating under a board. I did some research and the only thing that I found that was close in Washington was not what I caught. For the one I looked up has a rounded gaster, the one I found has a pointed one. On the one on the internet it had antenna that were black at the tips but on the one I caught they are black the whole way through. Then I looked up red paper wasp but apparently those do not live in Washington state. Any ideas?

Without better pictures it will be impossible to tell, it certainly does not appear to be a Polistes species though.

Polistes are present in Washington. But that is not what this is.

Solitary Wasp, not hibernating it was making a nest to lay eggs. You should let it go
