Sounds like a medium sized, black ant.   There is no picture.  Also, please provide a measurement in millimeters if possible.    Oh, and , what do you mean by "fell into my grasp"? All of these help when trying to ID an ant.   ;)  Oh, you edited the post, good job.  Ponerinecat is right, it is a Crematogaster species.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

Cool I've never kept a Crematogaster sp. ant before. I'll have to do some research on housing, feeding, temp, etc, but I at least can see that they are fully-claustral so I have some time to figure it out.

Thanks! Any advice where to look for general care for this genus? There is a care sheet but that guy is in Maryland and probably has a different species.

All Crematogaster are very similar
