Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies. 

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

Well, I've found a population of Cryptopone gilva in my area, and I plan on collecting a colony today. I've marked the log I found the specimen on, and I'm going out with a hammer, some tubes, an aspirator and some other anting things to collect them. Wish me luck!

Well, I've found a population of Cryptopone gilva in my area, and I plan on collecting a colony today. I've marked the log I found the specimen on, and I'm going out with a hammer, some tubes, an aspirator and some other anting things to collect them. Wish me luck!

I found zero Cryptopone, but I did find a bunch of Temnothorax tuscaloosae. :lol:

Ants I have:

1 Formica fusca group- 0 workers

1 Tetramorium immigrans colony-20 workers

1 Dorymyrmex insanus- 1 queen, used to have workers

 

1 large P. occidentalis colony- around 50 workers, plenty of brood

Yeah, Id say arenivaga.

I'd say not, honestly. He collected these from inside of a hickory nut. N. arenivaga, like the closely related N. phantasma, is a specialist sand-nesting species, with elaborate tunnels and chambers extending outwards quite a ways. They wouldn't live in a hickory nut, and not in this area either. I'd say some sort of really weird-looking terricola, but I'll have to get specimens to be sure. I believe he's sending me some, so I should be able to get an ID once I get them.

Would black-lighting near a beach be a good way to find either of these sand loving Nylanderia?

Update; 12/21/20

 

Lasius neoniger (Colony A)

Both queens are still alive, and they've got a total of 8 workers as of today. They've got around 25-30 brood items of all stages, and 2-3 of the pupae look ready to hatch. I've got a pic, too!
