I made wood nests for my carpenter ants last year. Then I cleaned it with water by drenching it before I put them in. Now there is a hole and no ants in it.

I put a pretty big drop of honey in my Formica tube because they hadn't eatin for a while, and like 10 minutes later I went to take out the leftovers so it didn't mold-you couldn't even tell there was ever honey in there.

Look up coyote peterson fire ant. You will see him, putting his hands into a fire ant nest-purposely. Don't blame him. He's doing it for "Science". He and his team are actual naturalists. Just saying :)
