This simulator is a Tamagotchi-like game, designed to simulate real ant-keeping in a test-tube and in a formicarium.

Downloaded it, but I have a feeling I'm not going to live a virtual thing that takes forever to get going.

I discovered this on the Facebook a while back.  I played around with it for around 2 months, but got bored because the ants appeared to thrive no matter how neglected they were.

I would highly recommend for beginners, as the app is much more forgiving than a real colony.  And the fact that the simulation occurs in real time, with your first workers arriving after 4-5 weeks, makes for an intensely thrilling experience that's nearly as exciting as the real thing. /s
