1. Location of collection:
Living in damp dirt under a board surrounded by tall grass in Owasso, OK.
2. Date of collection:
4/20/17 - Established Colony saved from being killed with pesticides.
3. Habitat of collection:
Tall Grass, Moist dirt. Scrubbish rural area in Oklahoma.
4. Length (from head to gaster):
~2mm for workers, ~3-4mm for queen
5. Color, hue, pattern and texture:
dark brown to black. queen's abdomen appears to have brownish stripes
6. Distinguishing characteristics:
Multiple queens found in colony. I captured 3.
7. Distinguishing behavior:
Seems to prefer living in the tube going from the nest to the foraging area, instead of the nest.
8. Nest description:
Nest was shallow dirt, mostly build under a float board. Some were living in the cracks in the board or inside a hollow stick, but they weren't burrowing into the wood on their own. Others living in the dirt, but even with hundreds of workers, colony wasn't more than 2" deep in soil.
