The most I have really seen an ant do that is close to jumping is when they use the strengh of there jaws to fling them selves into the air. Can they actually jump using their legs though? I know this is a stupid question, but, just I guess get used to it because they always come every once in a while.

Been keeping ants since January of 2021

Most ants cannot really jump, but there are some genera of ants that are specialized jumpers, such as myrmecia, harpegnathos and gigantiops. These ants have the ability to jump long distances and have great eyesight, allowing them to pounce on prey, escape a predator or easily traverse difficult terrain.

We have a species here in Australia that we call literally "jumping ants" in the common local name. And yes I can confirm they hurt a lot!!!

I have also seen a Camponotus pennsylvanica jump from a rock onto a large blue bottle fly, a distance of about an inch, downhill.

no offense dude but can you please stop reviving old threads? It contributes nothing to the forum and clogs up the recent posts section.

camponotus discolor can jump to grab food. Not very far, though.

In the linked video I feed them a dead fruit fly by waving it around with tweezers. The ant jump up and grab it. They jump about on half of a  body length or .5 cm. Not that impressive, but *I* can't jump half my body length so who am I to judge???

Gigantiops destructor can REALLY jump and there is a nice slow motion video here.... they are such beautiful elegant ants. I hope I get to see one in the wild some day...

Starting this July I'm posting videos of my ants every week on youTube.

I like to make relaxing videos that capture the joy of watching ants.
