Hi, does anyone know when the Australian honeypot ants Melophorus bagoti and Camponotus inflatus have their nuptial flight? I live in Sydney, but my grandparents travel to the outback a lot, maybe I can teach them to identify some! And also, if you've ever kept one of these species please tell me!

EDIT: Camponotus inflatus might be illegal to keep.

I do believe Camponotus inflatus are protected and illegal to collect. However Melaphorus bagoti should be fair game.

Can't help ya with flight times tho, sorry :/

No antkeeper has ever seen an inflatus queen and we have no idea what they look like, although bagoti has been collected a few times. You have to go WAY out into the outback to get them though.

Yeah, I couldn't find pictures of inflatus. I guess you'll just never know if you're breaking the law or not until you get workers.

This might be a stupid question but, if nobody knows what C. inflatus looks like then how is it well... a species?

myrmecologists know what they look like, and we do know what the workers look like. Its just that there are no known queen specimens that have been photographed.
