So, while I already attempted this this morning for my Formica colony, I thought I'd ask the hive mind if this is a sustainable option.
So my Formica have shown VERY little interest in cut up bugs, if any at all, but have DEVOURED honey. They also show little interest in their sugar tube, but honey is empty almost by morning the next day.
SO... I got a protein powder used for enhancing flavor in dog food (it's 64% protein and all of the ingredients are beef or 'beef byproduct'). I mixed a bit in with the honey and stirred it in until it was a thin paste, just a little thicker than the honey.
Is this a practice that is sustainable or is it better to give them both separately? I know the larva are basically fed protein but would the carbs do them any harm?
That's really my only concern, and the fact that workers don't NEED protein but I don't see the harm it would do them either. But again, I'm a beginner, looking for shortcuts and possible hacks to basic ant keeping.
