The 17-year periodical cicadas of Brood X are back in many areas of the east this summer. They've been slowly building up over the past few weeks, but yesterday their numbers really exploded. I wasn't much older than many of you youngsters on this forum the last time I saw this amazing phenomenon. What's really cool is that my son is getting really excited about them. He'll be 22 when they return.

Mayflies don't look like mosquitoes. I think you're thinking of crane flies.

You guys are so lucky. Our brood won't emerge until 2024, which is Brood XIX. They had a few emerge early this year and the year before, but I can't wait until our main emergence in 3 years.

I'll be on the lookout!  Do they come out later the more north you get?  Haven't seen any yet...  Also are these possible ant food?  Would be a gourmet for the ants, for this is only on the menu every 17 years!

They emerge when soil temperatures a few feet down hit 64 degrees, so that will be later the farther north you go. I have fed a few to my colonies. They annual cicadas are a lot meatier, though.

According to maps from google this brood only extends up to New York, but other generations are in MA I think. The ones coming out this year are going extinct in New York according to this article though.

Idk if that's sad or not when they go extinct in New york. They are cool but I'm not that big of a fan of them.

After a brief chill, the brood is back in full force now. Yesterday was the most I've seen yet. To remember this event, I encased two dead cicadas in resin.

I found the husk or whatever of a nymph on a tree one or two years ago. Is that normal?

Maybe it was the annual ones?
