Blacklighting is an excellent way to find lots of queens from some interesting species. You’ll mostly find smaller ants in our region. The only con is that you are contributing to light pollution that can disorient migrating birds and disrupt insects’ mating patterns. I only recommend leaving your light on for short periods while you attend it.

Keep ordinary ants in extraordinary ways.

Do you only have to point a black light or a regular light as well at the blanket?

Just a blacklight is enough, but stronger the better.
