It’s been a crazy good day for queens. Just caught this queen around 3:45. Is it parasitic? Or what is it haha?

By the way, it’s a dark red thorax and head with a black abdomen. I think it’s parasitic due to large head and smaller abdomen but I’m not sure

Definitely a Myrmentoma Camponotus, which are claustral and not parasitic. She's probably Camponotus discolor, one of only two bicolored red-and-black Myrmentoma with this color pattern in the east (the other being decipiens). C. decipiens is also found in Virginia, but their flights shouldn't last past April even in their more northern habitats.

Thank you! Could she eat through the cotton in a test tube?

I always pack a thicker wad of cotton for Camponotus because they love to pull it so much. Give her a drop of nectar to fatten up a bit.
