While at my grandmothers house again, I was watching some Prenolepis imparis workers go in and out of their nest at the base of a pine tree, when I decided to start to peel at the dead bark at the base of the tree. I saw some Solenopsis carolinensis workers and thought nothing of it, until I saw a queen moving in the dirt below, and then another. I collected them and most of the workers, and then I looked for more all around the base of the tree. It was a massive colony and there was no way I could have collected the whole thing, but in the end, I ended up with 21 queens and over 200 workers. I always see colonies of these ants, but I had never seen a queen until now. I had no idea they were even polygynous! They are currently awaiting their new formicarium inside of a plastic container with a small amount of dirt. I plan on keeping their setup rather moist with plenty of dirt and pine bark. I am very excited to see how this colony does and I will post pictures of them soon.
