After catching over 150 queens earlier in the year one of them turned out to be fertile.

In case you were wondering what 150+ queens look like, here.

Well anyway the fertile queen is paired up with a few others but the queens are dying one by one and I suspect and hope it is the workers killing off the infertile ones. Anyway, we will find out. Out of the original 10 queens in the test tube, there are two left, and the workers really seem to care about one specific one so I think its her and I have the fertile one. :D

Update: 7/28/2015

Well, I am pretty sure that the fertile queen in the original colony has been dead for a while. None of the eggs in the massive pile are developing any further. I am pretty sure that is it for that colony... :( But wait! I found a single Solenopsis molesta queen on a local blacklighting mission a few weeks ago, and she just so happens to be fertile!!! :yahoo:

 

I just do not understand why Solenopsis molesta that fly in the suburbs are always infertile while the Solenopsis molesta collected out in the wild have the same fertility rate as any other species... :thinking:

Update: 8/19/2015

I got rid of the old colony. However, the new queen just got workers. :)

Most of the workers died out of the colony. :(
