I spotted a new queen while visiting a family member up by Yosemite Area. Commonly see Carpenter Ants and Velvety Ants in the area, and after some help from Dspdrew I believe I have a queen Velvety Tree Ant. I was completley unprepared so I made a makeshift testube from an aquarium water test kit I had extra of. And she seems to be taking to it well, laid a few eggs after about 2 days in there and by the 3rd or 4th day she had laid a large pile that I counted to be around 25 eggs. I offered the queen some sugar water via a small piece of dabbed cotton, which she seemed to happily accept and drink from. Didn't want to disturb her too much but she seems to be doing well and tending eggs. Day 8 today 08.04.2021

Give this species lots of food, especially sugars, and they will grow at an insane rate.

Thanks for the tips! She is chilling, the quiet beginning. Day 10 and all is well. Eggs should be hatching soon I believe.

By chance, is that one of the test tubes for testing fish tank chemicals?

If not, ignore my insanity...

Edit: Please ignore my apparent inability to read.

I am curious in what microhabitat you found her in, under a stone, wandering, etc.? Good luck with her! Hopefully she displays the explosive growth this genus is know for.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

This queen fly into the house at night and I was able to catch her.

As far as the test tube, It is a test tube originally intended to be used to test water PH and to test the PPM of various additional components in regards to overall water quality.

Since it was an extra one, as I originally stated, it has never been used so works great.  (y)

First Larve seen, Day 13 moving quick. Looks to be about 16 or so maybe. Hard to count and didn't want to disturb her much. I gave her a tase of honey a couple days ago and she loved it.

Moving fast for this species! Larve are large, few smaller ones. Fed the queen some Protien Honey and she was super into it. Offered her the new formicarium but she is very chill and even in light stays calm and cool. Will wait for first workers to arrive and then will offer them the new nest again. All good.

its a shame

If I recall he was harassing members, unless I’m thinking of someone else.

Never mind it looks like you were the one being harassed so I’m going to assume you were being sarcastic.
