then society and YT culture as a whole is f*cked. You shouldn’t need clickbait or drama to get popular.

Finally figured that out? :sarcastic:

All of society is a long way from perfect, and has been declining for some time. Too many people simply want to blend in with the masses, content to walk off the cliff with the rest.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

Well that's how it works people want excitement in almost everything they want intensity that's why they use drama and clickbait to better excite their audience and for views it's how it works and their won't be change in a while better to stick to that than to fall off. Lol

Although it is clickbait, in all honesty he didn't lie about anything. He does say that it's likely meranoplus bicolor, but that of course it would be cool if it somehow was a new species. Of course his videos aren't highly scientific or anything, but imo nothing inherently wrong with what he did.

yes its just an assumption, and nothing wrong with what he did. I personally think its very interesting, but the way he suggests the scientific names gets at me.

I'm sure you are quite mad at the scientists who named Heteropoda davidbowieAphonopelma johnnycashi, or Aptostichus angelinajolieae just to name a few (and all of those are just spiders!)

Don't forget about Spongiforma squarepantsii.

haha that's amazing! I have never heard of that species before

There's a ton of wacky, nonsensical scientific names out there, but in general naming a species as a joke or without any proper context is frowned upon among the scientific community. One of the things people are really starting to oppose is naming species after people, especially yourself or someone not associated with the organism at all.

I know a few taxonomists and I have never heard that this practice is frowned upon. I don't think there is /any/ naming of species that is made without proper context. Scientists are people too, and just like other people, many of them also have corny senses of humor

Also, irrespective of that, I also cannot think of a name that is more associated with the organism than like, antscanadensis or whatever -- (if a new species) he literally found it and is the biggest popularizer of ants on the planet. I'm shocked no one has named a species after him/his channel already

There is NO rule against naming a new species after one's self as per the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature which regulates this issue.

What pisses me personally more off than all of his YouTube content is his Instagram account.

Most of the pictures he posts there are from others...

Wasn't the intention of Instagram to post pictures you took? And I know that there are a lot of other accounts doing the same or resharing other's Instagram posts.

At least on YouTube, it is mostly his original content.

Because I guess he makes sure to use photos that are free to use or people just don't know that their photos are shared on Instagram by someone else ;).

He often uses pictures from unsplash.com which are free to use even commercially. But it is still fishy. I mean I understand that if you write an article about ants or make a video maybe you need additional pictures but just posting them directly on Instagram is quite perky.

Some insight on naming of species taken from:

International Code of Nomenclature of Bacteria: Bacteriological Code, 1990 Revision.

(These standards are generally acceptable across the board)

Recommendation 12c

Authors should attend to the following Recommendations, and those of Recommendation 6, when forming specific epithets.

  1. Choose a specific epithet that, in general, gives some indication of a property or of the source of the species.
  2. Avoid those that express a character common to all, or nearly-all, the species of a genus.
  3. Ensure that, if taken from the name of a person, it recalls the name of one who discovered or described it, or was in some way connected with it, and possesses the appropriate gender (see Appendix 9A).  link here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.../books/NBK8801/
  4. Avoid in the same genus epithets which are very much alike, especially those that differ only in their last letters.
  5. Avoid the use of the genitive and the adjectival forms of the same specific epithet to refer to two different species of the same genus (see Rule 63).

Also, there is NO rule against naming a new species after one's self as per the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature which regulates this issue.

and finally for FAQ's I refer you here:  https://www.iczn.org/outreach/faqs/

I'm sorry, but I am a mircrobiologist and this resource is extremely outdated and incorrect -- I mean, this is from 1990 and refers to "appropriate gender". These standards from over 30 years ago are not "generally acceptable across the board". It's not even true within bacterial -- the vast majority of known bacterial species are unculturable, and the rate of discovery of "new species" (species are a difficult concept in bacteria, but that is a different discussion) is greater than humans could manually name. If you are curious about this topic, check out this paper from last year: https://www.nature.c...1564-020-0733-x

I find this nearly impossible that very outdated rules for bacterial nomenclature are the accepted standard for insects or other animals

I've been watching ants canada for awhile now, and he makes his video a little too dramatic, and is sometimes just clickbait, like the one when he made the "mysterious fog". So I've stopped watching him

You just gave him at least 1 more view. I don't normally watch AC but just did.

LOL. One of these days I need to watch his channel to see what all the fuss is about.

I think the haters are a little over zealous about him. Like many people, it is through AntsCanada that I found my way into the online world of ants. His early videos are of lower video quality, but a little more educational. I learned quite a bit about the basics. His video equipment go better, but his content seemed to cater to a less.. scientific? crowd. Which isn't evil or anything. He can do what he wants. Great footage of ants, but more... sensationalizing. It's format reminds me of trash tv. That is what bothers me personally, plus the way he speaks to the audience sounds like he is talking to a dog or a baby. If I put his ant videos on mute, they are great lol. AC gear isn't terrible either.. it seems quality and well thought out.. besides the test tubes that crack.

the products are ok, but his customer service is total garbage.

Absolutely. The new version is quite opaque and worthless in my opinion. The old versions are great, though!

To be fair, this is almost like any other youtuber.  Take Dream, for example.  One of the main reasons Dream got to fame was due to his PewDiePie videos, using the Youtube Algorithm to his advantage.   By AC using clickbait it highers the chance of it being clicked (hence the name clickbate), and if the video gets larger watch times and views, the Algorithm will reconize this, and it'll more likely push it to the top in Reccomended.  Then, by using drama, he keeps the viewers interesting leaving longer watch times.  If it had no drama, the veiwers might click off by getting bored.  You can't admit that if you weren't interested in ants, you would likely want to watch a scientific videos on ants (unless you're into that).  However, they would be more likely to be more interested in watching something dramatic.  After they get into ants then they would be more interested in scientific videos, since they know more.  So technically, this should be getting more people interested in ants, since its now more likely to get reccomended by the Algorithm.

I agree, his new outworlds seem to get scratched really easily, and are priced at 80 dollars! Though, I think his hybrid nest mini's actually seem ok.
