Update 7-13-2020

 

 We have pupae! Things are progressing nicely for my Pheidole bicarinata Phatheads. My original four queens I caught around the summer solstice have pupae now. They are tiny and up against the cotton, so they're a little hard to see, but I can definitely make out eyes. Some are starting to darken today as well, so I think nanitics are imminent! These are growing slightly slower than Tetramorium, which is still really fast!

 

 
On Tuesday, 7/7, there was a big flight of these again in my area. We had a heavy downpour the night before, and at least 10 of these showed up on my creepy black-light sheet. I gathered three I saw mate and drop their wings. I made room for the new queens by releasing the dud queens I had that had not laid any eggs yet. I had no idea how easy these were to find.
 
Can any PheidolePhenoms let me know how well these climb? It would be great if they're as bad as Tetramorium.

Ants I have: Tapinoma sessile(2 queen colony). RED MORPH Camponotus neacticus(now has pupae!), Tetramorium immigrans (x3), Aphaenogaster sp, Temnothorax sp, Brachymyrmex sp.   possibly infertile   :(,  Ponera pennsylvanica, and Pheidole morrisi!  :yahoo: 

 

Other insects: Polistes sp. Queen

                    

Ants I need: Pheidole sp., Trachymyrmex sp., Crematogaster cerasi , Dorymyrmex sp. Most wanted: Pheidole morrisii

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies. 

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

The brood is developing faster than my Pheidole morrisi!

My P. californica looooovvvvveee to climb more then eat their nice food... not sure if they are as good as Crematogaster. But dang they are good at climbing.

Pheidole californica =/= Pheidole bicarinata

 

Pheidole bicarinata won't give you too much trouble, at least not until the colony starts hitting its max size. The workers just don't seem to forage very far from the nest, even if they can escape, until the colony starts getting relatively large. They are not great climbers, but they can climb. Probably Somewhere in-between Tetramorium immigrans and Crematogaster cerasi.

 Awesome! What kind of humidity range? Any favorite foods?

They are not very picky ants whatsoever. They will eat most foods that you throw at them, my personal favorite was live fruit flies, and as long as you have some kind of humidity mechanism they will be fine. I don't know how high the humidity was in that nest but I would guess they're fine from 50-90%

Just curious, what would this max size be?

Around 3000 workers, I think.

Update 7-16-2020  :drinks:

 

Bam! We got our first nanitcs! One of the first queens I found got her first seven nanitics. They are probably less than 2mm, and they are eclosing in rapid succession. It took 26 days from when I collected the queen to first nanitics, which is super fast. That week in the 90s definitely helped, I'm sure.

Another of the queens isn't too far behind.
 
For their first meal, I put three tiny drops of Sunburst on a paper towel square with some crumbled up hemp hearts. I hope that is enough precaution not to drown the tiny nanitics.
