Apis mellifera. They actually come right of the bee boxes surrounding the cranberry marshes here.

We had a sunny day yesterday so I checked out the Ground ivy to see what was foraging. Besides a blurry shot of a B. impatiens, I snapped these Osmia sp.

I just realized all the pictures came out blurrier than they are in my SSD. If anyone else notices some graininess or blurriness please let me know.

Whoa Nicholas, are you raising Sweat bees!?!?  :o

 

In a way, yes... I'm trying a dirt setup since I hear they build their nests in the dirt I found around 120 individuals nesting in a log though and took around half, so we'll see how they do since there's no real documented ways of how to raise them. It's no Sweat. I hope at least one person understood that joke.

NicholasP, make a native plant pollinator garden. I don’t think keeping these in captivity is a good idea.

Aren't they native here? I'm also keeping them in captivity because I want to try and have some cocoons for when I get my real house in a few months to release there.

Of course they’re native. Let them live and thrive free. Pollinators are struggling severely.

I let them go in the end anyways since I was sure I'd see them pop by every now and then and lo and behold just today one of the sweat bee females landed right next to me on the wooden fence I was sitting next to, and I waved and off she went again. Just though I might add that. Oh, and by the way, get ready guys (and gals) for some leafcutter bee pictures since I have just placed in my order today in the morning for 200 leafcutter bees from Crownbees.com. I'm very excited and have been building up my armada of flowers which does include a Lilac I picked out for my mom.

Annuals like cosmos and zinnias can get you some quick blooms. Rudbeckia hirta is a biennial that blooms quickly as well. Another quick hack is to overseed your lawn with white clover. Aim to get more natives as well, so you have something blooming all season. I bet you could find some spring native plant sales in your area if you look around.

My Ground ivy is proving to be a hangout for a variety of species of bee. There were two Bombus sp queens looking for nesting sites. I didn’t catch them but I did get this Pure Green Sweat bee (Augochlora pura),
