In the past few weeks, my house has filled up with these annoying flies:

They are slightly bigger than the typical fruit fly, and all black. Maybe they're just some bigger version of fruit flies, but if there're any Diptheran experts on this forum, I'd appreciate figuring out what they are. Ideally I'd like to get rid of them before my DW illogically starts blaming my insect hobby once again. LOL

You're thinking along the right lines, Da_NewAnt.

Now I need to get some good fruit-fly traps...

Why not buy some flightless fruit flies online and some culture kits? You could have a fresh supply of fruit flies for your ants for the next year if you were to spend ~$50. Since my colony of Pheidole bicarinata decided they don't need or want hibernation, I just have a culture of flightless fruit flies going and I feed them from that.

Why buy flies when they live in your house.

Because if you buy them, they'll be flightless or even wingless all-together.

I usually pre kill my flies so it doesn't matter much to me.

Please make a good P. bicarinata journal because there really aren’t many on this forum.
I did order a flightless fruit fly culture last winter. The issue I pointed out in my first post is that my DW will start saying illogical things like I am attracting or causing an infestation in my house, nevermind that we have an entirely different species that has wings. Good times, lol.

In my house if we see a fly we clap it in the air and then throw it outside. Most of the time they are still alive but just paralyzed.

I’m fish-sitting my coworker’s betta fish over the holidays, and she’s been getting a steady diet of these pesky fruit flies. I’ve also fed her a termite, a mosquito, and a baby spider. Must be way better than the rock hard pellets she usually eats.

But house flies are so much bigger. Ants love them just as much.
