What do you use for a lid on the jars?

That is, what's the ventilation like?

Ants I have:

1 Formica fusca group- 0 workers

1 Tetramorium immigrans colony-20 workers

1 Dorymyrmex insanus- 1 queen, used to have workers

 

1 large P. occidentalis colony- around 50 workers, plenty of brood

He hasnt been online since 2018 means he hasnt logged into his account since 2018. Messaging won't do anything if he has stopped using the forum or just stopped using his account.

Hi, sorry for the very let reply I rarely get the chance to visit this site. But I just use what ever jar lid the jar came with. As for ventilation I just don't tighten the lid down,  this leaves room for air to get in.

that is awesome! how many termites in total?

 

maybe close to 400 or 500 members now. There is only 1 queen and king in the colony, so I think they will top off at 800 members. I know there is information on the net and books staying Drywood termite colony get to 2000 - 3000 individuals but from how slow this colony is growing I think 800 is the max for my colony I'm caring for.

Hey everyone I mention I did a test, which in a past post I tested six Drywood termite colonies. In the test, three dowel homes were to be keep bone dry and the other three were misted ever three days to keep them moist. The colonies kept bone dry lived fine and colonies which I periodically misted all failed. So I wanted to show you the defense mechanism or a automatic reaction from my main colony when I place a wet dowel in there home and the reaction to the moister. They do this to prevent fungus or disease-causing organisms associated with moist environment from taking hold and hurt or killing the colony.

 

here dowel I will use to wet

 

 

 

 

placing dowel in jar and wait 15 minute for them to found it

 

 

 

after 15 minute they start swarming the dowel to drinking up the water and clean up the mess I made. So too much moister in there environment is very bad for them.

 

 

you can see the change in the wet dowel as the worker are quickly drinking the water and drying the dowel.

I got tons of alates :yahoo: It took 13 years but now my colony is making wing alates.

Ok, Here my plan and idea to get tons of new colonies. Get a big plastic tub and put a lot of dowel then release them in it. Hope they make new homes. :lol:

How long does it take from founding pair to like 5 workers? I got a pair and they made a little chamber and plugged it up.

I think they are I. Minor, western drywood termites.
