Been ant crazy since I was a kid (i'm 29 now lol). I use to have uncle milton ant farms and now that I am getting older, have a stable career, home, etc; I'm starting to get back into my passion. Unfortunately back when I was young, besides the library, there were no other resources. I always felt alone in my fascination. There was always simant though that I use to play when I was a small kid. 

Anyway, I have lots of questions and pictures to share, but I'll post them in another subforum. 

We have lots of Fireants down here. There are harvester ants, black crazy ants, and several others. I need help IDing a few.

Corpus Christi. Right now all I have in test tubes are fire ant queens. 6 to be exact. I'm waiting for the flight of the harvester ants but I havent seen any flights, just the alates peeking out

Wow, south Texas! Houston here, we just had massive nupital flights, don't know if you guys had them or not, there are a lot of fire ants down here...


All my colonies are dead.

There's certainly a lot more resources available today for the budding amateur myrmecologist than there was back then.

Texas has a very nice array of species if you can break away from the disturbed habitat dominated by introduced ants.

Houston here. Lake Corpus Christi State Park at Mathis near you has some great looking Atta texana colonies.

Houston here. Lake Corpus Christi State Park at Mathis near you has some great looking Atta texana colonies.

Yea, we have them down here too. They are in one location here in the city which is seperated by a bay. (I had to google the Atta Texana - I'm still learning the official names lol).A friend of mine has a nest in his front yard and I had one in my yard when I was a kid which coincidentally is not too far from my friends house.
