I'm not intending to start a debate, but this is obviously clickbait and he’s obviously view hungry. It’s literally just meranoplus bicolor. Everyone on Instagram is finally turning against him, and I couldn’t be happier. This man does not represent us.

POPULAR

He's an entertainer and needs to make a story to appeal to an audience.  This seems like a pointless topic to stir up more conflict.

I'm not trying to start a debate, just showing how stupid AC is. It just makes me so angry to see this from the guy who got many of us into the hobby.

I know you don't want to start a debate, but a post like this can be tied to "the state of the forum" with complaining about AC again.  We've already gone through a phase like this in the forum and people complaining about him; I thought we were done with that.

You just gave him at least 1 more view. I don't normally watch AC but just did.

I agree that this post shouldn’t have been made, but I wonder how much he paid those experts to say that it could be a new species.

Although it is clickbait, in all honesty he didn't lie about anything. He does say that it's likely meranoplus bicolor, but that of course it would be cool if it somehow was a new species. Of course his videos aren't highly scientific or anything, but imo nothing inherently wrong with what he did.

I think the haters are a little over zealous about him. Like many people, it is through AntsCanada that I found my way into the online world of ants. His early videos are of lower video quality, but a little more educational. I learned quite a bit about the basics. His video equipment go better, but his content seemed to cater to a less.. scientific? crowd. Which isn't evil or anything. He can do what he wants. Great footage of ants, but more... sensationalizing. It's format reminds me of trash tv. That is what bothers me personally, plus the way he speaks to the audience sounds like he is talking to a dog or a baby. If I put his ant videos on mute, they are great lol. AC gear isn't terrible either.. it seems quality and well thought out.. besides the test tubes that crack.

yes its just an assumption, and nothing wrong with what he did. I personally think its very interesting, but the way he suggests the scientific names gets at me.

And the fact that the audience has no actual knowledge of ants. They are suggesting names that make no sense whatsoever.

I'm sure you are quite mad at the scientists who named Heteropoda davidbowieAphonopelma johnnycashi, or Aptostichus angelinajolieae just to name a few (and all of those are just spiders!)

I honestly don't see a point to say that AC has gone to far because its not like we can go around spreading news that he doesn't make the best videos, because even if people see it they won't really care as long as they see the content that they have always saw. making this thread won't actually do anything to AC, unless you guys want to PM him on this forum or message him or suggest something on his descriptions.

If AC was a smaller YouTuber I wouldn't care. But he has 4 million subs. He basically represents all ant-keepers and not well.

There's a ton of wacky, nonsensical scientific names out there, but in general naming a species as a joke or without any proper context is frowned upon among the scientific community. One of the things people are really starting to oppose is naming species after people, especially yourself or someone not associated with the organism at all.

I think it perfectly reasonable to name the species after the person who discovered it.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).
