So Formica subintegra had nuptial flights today and I caught 2 queens from flights, but what i didn’t expect is that when I dug into their nest they would have 3 dealates including one that’s a callow. Which means they might be inbreeding because I don’t think they would send a callow out let it mate then drag her back in. Also both queens I caught from flights were also inbred as I watched their brothers mate with them.

Well 3 queens got killed, they have one larva, and all the hosts have eclosed.

Nice, hopefully this colony does better then the previous one. I caught one of these about two weeks ago. She has 8 hosts and about a dozen host pupae. Do you know when they’ll start laying?

I think most the times they start laying after hibernation but they sometimes lay before.

I caught some latipes, I’m not getting my hopes too high but i was able to successfully introduce a queen to workers last year so hopefully I can get them to workers with this batch.

All 4 of the latipes I caught are still alive, 2 are at the tolerance stage, 1 is being cleaned, and 1 seems to be accepted to the main host group.

OMG I love latipes. Please keep us updated on them. I know they can be tricky. But what interesting ants!

I tried to combine a 1 and 2 queen group and 1 queen is fighting another but she seems to not care about the other one.

Both groups are doing good, and all queens are being fed.

The 2q group died but I expected that because it was a super tiny host group with 2 queens. I also put the 1q one into diapause.

Update please! I love this journal! Also, good on you for getting that latipes queen a proper amount of hosts. Some people say that all you need is 20 or so workers, but if you want success, you would want 200-300 hosts or more like what you have.
