Those are definitely Solenopsis carolinensis they are tiny and light colored like mine.

Most species in the Solenopsis molesta-complex are tiny and light colored. There is really no way to tell the difference without a microscope. I'd just leave it at Solenopsis sp. for now.

Excellent! The pupae phase is really short with Pheidole.

Nope. She does indeed look like Ph. morrisii.

Are you sure? The workers are hardening and are now brownish in the head and gaster.

The queen looks normal for Pheidole morrisii though.

Lasius are the king of hard to id, but able to without genetic testing. I mean, once you know how, and if you have a microscope its not that hard though. All you have to do is count, and look at the shape of the teeth on the mandible, and look at what type of hairs there are on the antennal scape. At least for niger group.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

Solitary bees are even harder. Experts hardly even bother getting to species level.
