I've had a fascination for keeping ants for a while and have 6 colonies at the moment however 5 of them are still in the founding stages but that's fine watching them grow is pretty cool even though it takes ages. I have 2 Tetramorium colonies, a Crematogaster Cerasi colony, Lasius Alienus, Lasius Neoniger, and a Formica Subsericea. I generally don't like putting ant colonies into a formicarium but into a terrarium cause it seems more naturalistic also coz I like plants and wild related stuff. most probably not gonna contribute much to the community cause I'm still a newbie at ant keeping.

Welcome Ken. Glad to hear from another Ontarioan (is that even a word? :) )

Looking forward to seeing photos and updates of your colonies. Be sure to add yourself to the Member Map as it makes an ideal tool to find local anters. We're pretty sparse on the map now but I know that not everyone uses it. My hope is that some day there will be enough of us to make it worthwhile to meetup and even trade. Still a newbie myself but I've learned so much over the last year and most of it right here.

Ontario is pretty big. Were are you exactly if you don't mind my asking?

I've always wanted to try one of those Annual Ant Togethers like the NJers have been doing since I started anting

Well going by the map we're ahead 5 to 4. :)

But in all seriousness, that is why I hope all the others Map themselves as I suspect there are others who have not opted in. If the numbers warrant (based on the map filling out) maybe we can really have a get together some day.

Even though I'm in Ottawa, I get to Toronto every few months and even to Waterloo as of last year since I have a son attending university there. I was just through Toronto and Mississauga 2 weekends ago and will be going back in another two weeks. Just to say that someday a meet may be possible.

I'm originally from Montreal and go back quite often.  Recently revisited the Montreal insectarium with the incredible Atta ant exhibit and even met the maintainer Dominic Ouellette, who was briefly featured in Mikey's AntsCanada video when he visited. Had a nice long chat with him an learned a few things about their setup and the ants themselves.

you can't bring ants from BC to Ontario right? Or is it legal to ship ants between countries in Canada?

That's way more Ontario members than I thought, should we start an Ontario anting thread like a lot of the states have?
