how long would you consider brief ? two minutes ?

5-10 min. no more than 10, or your ants will have a hard time recovering.

All my colonies are dead.

 Except:

  Pogonomyrmex barbatus

  Pheidole obscurithorax

  Pheidole morens

Thread necro?

We should respect all forms of consciousness. The body is just a vessel, a mere hull.

once you have posted pix in the gallery, and you now have more can you create another gallery?

say you want to separate by species or collection dates. Or do we continue to use the gallery that we already have

I would say feeding an ant seems to be the easiest way to keep an ant still long enough to take a photo. Most photos I have taken was when they were feeding or had just fed.

for some reason, my computer does like the image that LEO posted on page one. Does anyone know what causes this?

I have tried Flikr and Google, but when I post the link they give it does not appear correctly. I know that this is frustrating the people that are trying to help me identify my queens at least as much as it is me

You have to make sure that you use the link to the image itself. Often you get a link to a html page and it won't work if you try to embed it here. If you see an image you can right klick and select "copy image link" (or whatever it is called in English version of your browser)

Thank you for your answer, I went back and tried those from both Flickr and Google. They failed in exactly the same way, it has to be my computer. Although, I can embed a photo properly on an email.

Just use a flash so you don't have to freeze the ants. Due to the flash you won't have any motion blur.

Gorgeous! Thanks for the tip. Its always the little things.
The problem with flash is that it will produce quite hard light. To make flash light softer use a softbox or an umbrella

This picture was taken using flash without a softbox:

The same problem with direct sunlight. Sunlight is great because it is really bright which is great for macro photography however direct sunlight is quite hard too.

Using an umbrella to cast a shadow on the scene:
