I created a new fruit fly culture for these drosophillia wingless fruit flies I bought at PetSmart. It was made of just some apple sauce and crushed cheerios mixed together. 

What happened was crazy...

First two are larvae to past generation pupae comparison

 

The same wingless fruit flies doubled in size. I found some hydei outside, and I'm pretty sure some of these might be larger than them...

The fruit flies were eating off of the mold that formed from the apple sauce (which is normal I believe)

Make sure you keep those alive Lol, maybe a genetic mutation.

Yeah I have found these in some of my cultures, especially homemade ones. For me, they all flew out the moment I opened the container.

Oh, that's too bad. Did you make your cultures from scratch? Or did you buy winged fruit flies?

I bought some cultures to start with then made my own. Unfortunately all my cultures collapsed over vacation so I have to start over.

Haha, I was a little skeptical of the flies' hygiene and size at first, but my ants seem to have no problem eating them. In fact, they're so full of protein that it takes quite a while for my ants to dismantle the flies.
