Hi all -

Well, I've been researching ant keeping for a little while and found this forum. This seems like the kind of resource I've been looking for!

I'm in Denver and looking forward to learning and meeting other local ant keepers. My son and I are getting ready to start our first ant colony - just in the planning phase right now.

We already keep phasmids and mantids, so keeping insects isn't new to us but my only experience with ants was one of those ant farms they sell kids in the 70s!

thanks and HELLO!

Yep, just getting started with ants. Getting my first colony this weekend, I hope.

Is your chinese a male or female? How old? I have 2 males that are around l4, and my mature female may note be able to wait for them to reach maturity, and she's already calling!

I caught it in my neighbor's yard. It is a mature male. Do you mean 14 months? If so they are at the end of their lives.

I meant L4 as in 4th instar. A male chinese wouldn't live 14 months!

Yea like all the other insects I'm getting addicted. I have a lasius queen with about 5 workers, a tetramornium colony with about 15 workers, and a friend is sending me a camponotus arriving tomorrow!

I assume so, they are caught locally.

Then they are. I might look for Pheidole next year but I am leaning towards Camponotus castaneus or Solenopsis molesta. I may move to Colorado eventually (I lived there in the past).
