So, this contest would be like the one Antscanda did many years back. The person that is in charge of the contest would choose a genus of ant and the contestants have from the beginning of the chosen genus's flight season, to hibernation time in October to raise the largest colony possible. The person with the largest colony, wins and gets a prize. (For example: a few test tubes.)

I would do it without the prize.

I would too! I have been thinking about this for two months now. Hope others like it and participate!

There are only 2 species I can think of that could work right now. Tetramorium immigrans and Tapinoma sessile. Both grow really quickly and are obtainable right now, at least I think Tapinoma is considering I caught a queen recently.

Yes, those would work. I did not word my post correctly. The person running the contest would pick a genus of ant, so more people around the world could participate.

Well not really, I was describing the 2 most common species of the Genus that are in the US.

Why not simply make a 'journal of the month' that gets a shoutout in announcements (and is stickied for the month)?

Lack of journals really isn't an issue here but the average quality of journals is (especially when compared with german antkeeping forums where the average journal quality is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay above). Formiculture has some really good journals but they simply drown in the mass of entries and there is nothing done to showcase them and inspire others to produce better journals as well.

I think keeping Solenopsis invicta is probably best idea, cause they are always available and fly all the time and are wonderful ants for ant keeping, especially with cats and little children around.

But in honesty, I agree with Serafine.

How about two genus's solonopis and lasius.

Those have completely different reproduction rates. The winner of the contests would be heavily favored for Solenopsis keepers.

Formica would be the best one imo. They are everywhere and they grow at a pretty nice speed.

I like Serafine's idea better then the whole colony growing contest, though.

Tetramorium is probably the most common thing around here you can catch right now. I'd vote for Tetramorium over anything.

I like Pheidole too. I'm probably just biased though because the only Pheidole around here are small, fast growing, polygynous ants that are just about to nuptial fly.
