Hello all,

I just caught a queen that still has its wings. It is relatively small and is golden yellow. I am in the California Bay Area. Does anyone know what species this is?

The Photos linked have a ruler in centimeters.

Maybe some sort of solenopsis species? Can't really make out with the one picture I was able to see. Couldn't see the other one for whatever reason

I may set her free. She has not laid any eggs overnight nore does she look like she will. She just stayed in the same position.

Do you think this is a good idea?

I’m guessing some sort of solenopsis, do NOT set her free, queens can take weeks to lay eggs. Even if they have wings!

There are three species of Solenopsis in the Bay Area. S. tennesseensis, S. molesta, and S. xyloni. Because of the coloration, I'd say this queen most closely resembles S. molesta. Also, Solenopsis molesta did fly last night as someone else in San Jose caught a queen, so I'm pretty sure it's Solenopsis molesta.

Solenopsis molesta most likely. They are flying right now and it is quite possible you caught one that hasn't mated yet.
