Hello, KooYon here (pronounced Couillon...its cajun french). I am VERY new to ant keeping (thanks to AntsCanada). I've only recently started looking for Queens, heck I don't even know the scientific names except for 1 or 2.  To be honest, I can vaguely tell the differences in ants (except for size and color).

Here in SW Texas, harvester ants are so prevalent, walking around looking for queens, they are all you see. So any help from more experienced ant keepers would be greatly appreciated. I would just like to know what kind of ants I can find here in SW Texas and where to look.

Anyway, nice to be here and looking forward to anting.

Thanks.

Currently Keeping:

Pogonomyrmex Barbatus 4 queens each with eggs

Pogonomyrmex Rugosus 1 queen with eggs

Camponotus Festinatus 1 queen with eggs

Myrmecocystus Placodops or Mendax 1 queen with eggs

Atta Texana 8 queens with fungus

Welcome to Formiculture! Before you start looking for queens, you need to have the tools to keep them properly. I would suggest beginner's guide first to make sure you understand everything and then go from there.

Here is a list I put together, has most of the information you will find scattered on these forums:
