Has that ever been tried? Scrape a tiny bit of the fungus and grow it independently without ants?

There is some enzyme it needs I think. The ants provide it through their secretions. I did take some and put it in a test tube by itself, and it lasted for quite a while.

The fungus is wholly dependent on ants, and can not survive without proper care, which includes, but is not limited to, constant pruning, fertilization with ant excretions, and constant addition of substrate material that features particular, indiscernible attributes.
