First of all I have no idea about any of this, so pls bare with me. So I am currently using a Nikkon PK-13 27.5mm extension tube on a AF Nikkor 50mm 1:1.4 D lens. Is this setup okay? Is it actually good enough to take photos of ants with? Its quiet a struggle to both focus and get the right depth of field on the ants I am taking photos of both in nature on the ground and in test tubes. So basically what I am asking is am I doing somthing wrong or am I expecting too much from a extension tube. Thanks

It should take okay images. I don't know much about it though... where is Nurbs?

Here here!

Your setup is fine, but if you want even closer shots you can use a modern cell phone - anything made within the last few years - and couple it with a clipon macro lens from Amazon (it's just a magnifying glass). Camera sensor technology has advanced dramatically in the past few years, and you should be able to get some stellar shots with just a phone camera instead of spending a lot of a DSLR/ext tube/macro lens combo. Of course the latter setup will still yield better images, but for most people a cell phone is good enough.

Check out my youtube channel. All shot with an iphone and a $15 clipon macro adapter.
