Don't worry Ken, they can be bullies on here and get quite ridiculous.
To answer your question, if 100+ can fit in a test tube setup, than surely 500+ can fit in your terrarium ..
Although it does depend on humidity/species/ability to keep them inside...but it looks great

500 camponotus workers? I think not. While for some species, like pheidole, you can fit maybe a thousand workers in there, larger species, even formica, won't be sustainable in there over 100 workers.

um you do realize how big the jar is right? its a 2 gallon jar

Doesn't affect the estimate that much. What matters is the area of the soil in the bottom. Could you possibly put a coin or something for scale and add a picture? This would help us give a much better estimate. Or just provide dimensions.

Oh ok then, probably at least 200 Camponotus, much more if they are myrmentoma. Since myrmica might be a good species for this, I would say at least 400 workers, if not more.

Pretty sure we're in different parts of the world. lol ants where I am are marginaly smaller than sp.(s) you guys are keeping I'm thinking..

I'm unfamiliar with the Camponotus anyway..? Not my particular interest so sorry, I prefer field ants that would like damp clay like soil (etc) so I think the tiiiiny workers of say p.imparis or lasius could resonablilty fit in there in large numbers..although you'd never see them lmao

*stayloki confession* the big black species kinda freak me out. Camponotous, even lasius niger..pavement ants..etc. I prefer golden meadow ants, for example, which are teeny eensy weensy

I would say 30-50 larger species such as camponotus maximum; no where near 500. Due to the humidity, I don't see any barriers working effectively. Soon as you open that jar, the whole colony is going to awake enraged.

Ideally I don't see 50 being sustainable either. You might be able to get away with smaller species that don't tend to climb glass and is capable of sustaining 80%+ humidity.
