Found this on reddit.

Time: 1 week ago
Location: 34.7034 -118.9857- https://www.google.c...034!4d-118.9857

Descriptions:

"Found in the early early morning. Many frantically digging through sand, this one on a tree."

"Along a stream about a 6 mile hike down off a fire road. Was a big grassy clearing and there were plenty flying around in the morning a week ago. Could hear their wings beating!"

Ocreatus? Americanus?

Given the description of density, this is a potentially huge find.

Will need more info like size and also better images, especially of the head. But given the location and habitat, it is most likely Camponotus vicinus.

Can say for sure it is not Camponotus sansabeanus, just by the thorax coloring.

"I'd say close to 15mm. It was large. That's what caught my eye initially. I thought it was a beetle flying through the air then realized I could see them every few steps I took. Didn't get a chance to look much further as I was in a rush but I did snap a lot of pictures in hopes of a positive ID. Here's an imgur album for everyone. I apologize for the blurry photos. Took them on my phone and they did NOT want to stand still."
