It's my first night blacklighting for queens here in northern NV. I think it is still going to be told cold out as the temp I'd dropping quickly, but I still gotta try if I am every gonna get those queens from around me 😁. Anybody else been having success with the blacklight in their area?

Low tonight is 37f, currently 52f.... Come on ladies.

Ball park of 55f. Tomorrow is supposed to finally hit the 70's so it was really just a trial run to make sure everything was going to work again. We have had some rain lately and the local colonies have been ramping up.

Where did you get the blacklight? I've looked on ebay but the only thing like that is DJ lights, and I'm not certain whether they'd actually attract insects...

Walmart, and it was attracting mosquitos and midges just fine up until the point I believe it got to cold. It also emits enough uv light to make u ashamed of any ketchup and mustard stains u may have on your shirt from lunch  :/ . It's also not my first year using it to attract bugs so idk why you are doubting it.

Edit: I am sorry. I misread the original message this morning and included that snidey remark at the end... I left it strikethrough so the world could see my stupid remark for posterity.

I'm back at it again tonight. It is quite a bit warmer, mid 60s, but there is more of a breeze so I am forced to do it in my open garage door. I am getting more moth traffic tonight so that's a good sign temps are headed in the right direction. When I checked the local colonies earlier I didn't see any alates getting ready to go, but I figure if I set the light up a bit every night, I am bound to get something!

Kinda wish there was a Walmart in Australia now... Only thing I've been able to find at retail stores was black light bulbs or insect zappers unfortunately. Although I do have a spotlight outside that might work with the bulbs. Quite new to the hobby and I've only been able to find one queen so far haha. I've got at least 3 nests of myrmecia simillima bull ants in my paddocks though so hopefully I can get a queen from one of them.

You can use the bug zappers, you just have to take it apart and remove the zappy part. If you are at all mechanically inclined, it's not to difficult, there may even be a YouTube video or two on it.

I usually don't get much success until I can feel how hazy it is. (About 70s night temperature)

ya, i had to give it a shot, it was the warmest weather we have and guess what... we are getting more snow! So it was the last chance to blacklight for a while.
