Hi,

Where I live (Maryland), this Thursday it will reach 70º F. However, the next day it will drop to 59º F, on Wednesday it will be 55º F. Is it likely to be a nuptial flight on Thursday? I plan on checking anyways. Just want to gauge how excited I should be. :D

I wouldn't be surprised at all if they fly at that temperature.

Does this species like to nest fields or semi-wooded areas?

Prenolepis imparis tend to live near wooded areas, for whatever reasons. I've gathered all my queens at the edges of forests or area's with groups of trees.

I found my queens on the side of the road. We would catch a queen every 10 seconds.

It is possible to vary in different regions.

Same here. In my experience they are found in grassy areas with a sparse amount of trees or on the borders of Oak/Maple forests. As you get more experience with them you are eventually able to predict what areas could potentially have them.

This was at the edge of a forest. There were Prenolepis nests every 5 feet.

I live in the woods, and I've yet to see any signs of them where I live.  At work, it's in a suburban area with a couple small parks, and I was catching them on the side walks as they really stuck out.  I was up in Manchester, NH last winter, middle of the city, and saw them foraging, so being a city dweller doesn't mean lack of finding them either.

I found my Prenolepis queens in my garden and they were coming from two trees in the front and back of my house. I wasn't near a forest at all.

Hi!

I am in Maryland, too. I have been on the forum for a while but I usually lurk because I couldn't remember my password.

I recovered it to report that Prenolepis imparis did not fly in my area (Darlington, MD) on Thursday.

I had also anticipated flights, but checking the colonies around me showed that they had no interest in flying.

I checked from 3pm to dusk.
