Q1=Queen 1

Q2=Queen 2

Found Q1 while walking out of my school. She had wings when I found her and was walking around on the ground. I see many male Prenolepis imparis alates at my school.

Q1Date of Collection: Feb 1, 3:14 PM

Q1Habitat of collection: Sidewalk near some shrubs at school

Q1Length (from head to gaster): 7-8mm

Q1Color: In normal/low light Q1 is brown, but in the sunlight, she shines in a butterscotch color

Q1Pics:

Found Q2 as I arrived at my house from school and found her mating with a male a lot smaller than her size, on my patio/garden which is surrounded by two nuptial flights of what I presume to be Prenolepis imparis. The males in the flights are 3-4mm and will start a swarm in a tree which is right behind my patio, off to the side of my house, and there will be another swarm in the tree next to my driveway. The queen was mating with one of these males, so I'm positive she is Prenolepis imparis.

Q2Date of Collection: Feb 2, 3:48 PM.

Q2Habitat of Collection: On my patio/garden near a lot of shrubbery and trees.

Q2Length (from head to gaster): 7-8mm

Q2Color: In normal/low light Q1 is a light brown, but in the sunlight, she shines in a butterscotch color

Q2Pics:

The Q2 photos aren't that good.

My guess is that both queens are Prenolepis imparis.

Prenolepis imparis does, indeed, sound reasonable for both. Can you get better pictures with better lighting? The first looks eerily Lasius-esque, but I doubt it is...

Ikr. At first, I also thought it was Lasius until I saw it in the light. I don't want to disturb the queens right now but I have a non-macro picture of a dead queen I found in the same spot showcasing the true color.

Yeah it's Prenelolepis Imparis, this is coming from somebody also for the south bay:) My friend (YsTheAnt) and I caught around 80 of these queens over the weekend.

Oh! I know YsTheAnt from the AC Forums. He comments on my Camponotus hyatti journal a lot. I wish I could catch that many lol. The queens in my patio keep dying now when I catch them because of pest control pesticides to keep argentine ants out. It's a bummer but it has to happen so the colonies in my house don't get raided by the argentines.

There can be variation in the color. You can see the gold really clearly in the sunlight.

Yeah, the queens vary in color slightly. The workers around here are darker, mostly really dark brown or black, and the queens are similarly a light to dark brown, unlike some other places where they are good and bright orange

They're like skittles. Comes in a variety of colors. Here's a nice video of the East coast variety of P. imparis from Tarheel Ants.
