I see there are a lot of Canadians here which is nice, but I was wondering if it would be possible to add Canada as a sub-forum under International.  Not sure why there is only Australia there now, but I notice that quite a few queries are region specific and it would be nice to relegate those to their own country specific sub. It would also be better suited to meetups and such.

Also, I'd like to take this moment to remind many of the others here to add your location to your profile. I know that some prefer not to for privacy reasons which is fine if that is the case, but I suspect that others haven't done so only because they don't know of the mapping feature that allows you to find nearby hobbyists.

Thanks for considering.

There's really no point in having international subforums. Majority of the members here are from the US and most international questions can be answered by anyone. Having more sub-forums unnecessarily limits the threads people see by clicking on generic sub-forums such as "General Ant Keeping".

Possibly a good idea. Though, the reason it hasn't been done already is that, unlike Australia, there are fewer than a dozen ant species that are endemic to Canada, and all of them occur south of the border, as well. Canada has much more in common with a northern U.S. state than a country in Oceania.

And actually, Kevin, only about 45-55% of Formiculture.com membership is from the US. Australia comes in second, and is highly over-represented based on their relative population. When a member from Australia, Europe, or Asia does post a question here, only to receive an "answer" from an American adolescent with a degree from Google Search University, it often comes across as pretty insulting. Consequently, those members typically don't stay long or post more than a couple times.

The only section type that would actually make sense would be a european section so certain NA people don't loose their mind every time we're discussing the keeping of exotic ants...

And actually, Kevin, only about 45-55% of Formiculture.com membership and traffic is from the US.  When a member from Australia, Europe, or Asia does post a question here, only to receive an "answer" from an American adolescent whose most relevant expertise consists of searching Google, it often comes across as pretty insulting.  Consequently, those members typically don't stay long or post more than a couple times.

I agree with you on that Canada is too similar to the US and other regions to display separately, and you are correct about the quality of posts coming from American users. However, I think the percentages of useless posts from other regions, especially English speaking regions, are likely nearly proportional to that of the US volume. While US may "only" make up 45-55% of Formiculture traffic, that is still "majority" versus every other smaller region. However, that is ultimately besides the point. I think it is unnecessary to divide up all the posts into small sub-categories because many members enjoy just viewing posts, including myself. The "Recent Threads" list is very useful and I often use that to browse Formiculture, but on occasion I like to look at old threads too. Unless you relay separate subforums to a general forum or something along that nature, I find Formiculture too small to be separating regions into sub-categories.

I understand your point, but my intent wasn't to have the sub forum to discuss ant care and topics that would be of interest to all but to address those topics that would be of particular interest to Canadians only, one example being the locale specific meetups and such.

Other topics I've noticed that would be handled better if segregated would be the topic of supplies. There are many store chains that are US exclusive so when I read "You can buy these at <US chain/UK chain/etc>" I find that doesn't help me out. It would just be nice to pop a question into a "Canada" section to see what others here are doing/buying. This also applies to us ordering from other places where shipping charges can make or break a deal. It would be easier if I could easily address Canadians on such matters without having to add "Canada" to the topic title and hope that other Canadians see it on the "Latest Posts" or "Newest topics" sidebars.

So you want a specific classified area for Canada?

Personally, I think this is a pretty good idea.

The only problem is, don't most of the Australians here use the non region-specific journal and ID subforums more?

There isn't really much point in posting a journal in a region-specific forum section.

ID probably makes a bit more sense considering that Australia has some pretty special ants.

I'm from Canada, I really don't see a Point in making a subforum for Canada. We have at best 12ish people from Canada. I also don't see really anything "specific to Canada" that can't be discussed on the general boards/forums. It's not like we are that different from America anyway as far as species go.

I've been on sites that make boards for every little "Niche" and they end up being not very active, not much point in having dead boards.
