For many years I have collected and pinned insects... I stored them in insect drawers and cabinets..  I used mothballs and crystals to keep mites out of the the collection... I want to convert my insect drawers in to a test tube apartment complex housing all my queens... I will be able to control temperature and air flow.  My concern is that over the years the mothball smell is almost a permanent.. so my questions are..

1. Do any of you know if mothballs will effect the queens?

2. Have you ever been able to get rid of the smell they make?

3. Did you click on this because you did not know what mothballs were?  Here is a link:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mothball

4. What about insect drawers Link: http://www.forestry-...r&itemnum=53723

5. What about insect cabinets Link:  http://www.forestry-...ts.php?mi=52851

I will be modifying the drawers by removing the lids and installing inserts to keep them from rolling Link: https://www.thingive...m/thing:1364384

Don't have much experience with mothballs, so hard to say, but knowing how sensitive ants are to aerosol or air-based pesticides, it is most likely is harmful. Could also be species specific.

Try a few worker ants and see!

I wouldn't chance it since there will be less air circulation....

-PS, for some reason I really like the smell of mothballs...

never smelled moth balls, but I would assume they would smell sickly sweet. The smell that you know is poison or just really artificial stuff.
