I live in northern california area and have an interest in keeping a Velvetey Tree ant colony. What are the best places to search and do they have multiple queens? Or should i wait until a nuptial flight season, and if so when are they ussually in season. Also any information in the preffered caring of this species that differs from general wood ant keeping would be great.

Your best bet is probably catching a queen - they have enormous colonies which will make it very difficult to catch them.  It appears they fly in May.

As far as care, it looks like they eat the standard go-to's for ants (insects, sugars, etc.) and they can live in wood.  They also probably need a lot of space, as they can form huge foraging trails that can go a long ways.

You can get most information you need by reading journals. I have a journal on them, as I've kept them off and on for years.
