Hey guys,

 

I work with a production company filming a new wildlife documentary. We want to film ants in a controlled environment in South Africa, and I am struggling to find any suitable locations. Any know of any zoos, menageries or large private collections in South Africa that might be willing to let us film their ants? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, welcome to the forum!

I'm not sure if there are any good zoos in South Africa with large ant colonies. If you are willing to travel a bit, the Peabody Museum in Connecticut has a large Atta sp. colony, and many European ant stores have very large colonies on display. Are there any species in particular that you want to film?

Also, what is the documentary called? I would love to watch it! :)

Are you looking to film specifically south African ants? Or just ant species in general. Because if that's the case you could probably buy some footage from some people here possibly?

What's the dpcumentary? I can name a few ant species that would be perfect...also, filming ants in their natural environment is difficult but worth it, if you ask me...ps some species nice to film would be dorylus, oecophylla,trap jaw ants, cataglyphis bombycina, etc.

Hey guys,

 

Thanks for the replies! Great information. The series doesn't have the title that will be used on TV just yet. Will be release late 2018, and the title will be decided before then at some stage. Although it doesn't 100% have to be a South African species, that is the next location we are filming at, so it is the most ideal for us. The series will be all about their communication and caste system. Watch this space, I can update when things are decided :)

I would recommend dorylus in africa, leafcutters(atta) in africa, carebara diversa in asia.

I agree a Dorylus species would be best.

I know of a few researcher at Stellenbosch University that studies ants and that has a few great colonies going at this stage. You should try and contact the entomology department of Stellenbosch and ask them if it will be possible.
