How are people selling lasius niger and flavus (etc) queens without any workers at this time of the year? All the major ant selling websites have an offer for "queen only", but every single one of my lasius queens I caught this summer already have workers. Do they remove the brood from these queens to boost other colonies, or is there a high risk that the ants being sold as "queen only" are infertile?

I'm not familiar with how the sellers operate, so might be missing something obvious.

Where are you located?

Scandinavia, so the queens typically lay eggs in August-September.

I know the North American variant typically waits until spring.

ah, yeah not sure. I wouldn't buy any colonies unless they had workers. Otherwise people could just go get alates from anthills. I've personally sold colonies without workers  myself. But I of course have a good idea they are fertile, also I sell them super cheap and make everyone aware of the risks involved.

EDIT: Also, the username, couldn't help but notice it. what's a TC collector? Are you here to collect me?

(Bet drew is gonna check some IP adresses. )
