I have a Veromessor Pergandei colony that had its first worker eclose about 5 months ago. After a month or two, they made it up to about 18 workers but haven't grown at since, for the past few months they've just fluctuated on a range between 13-18 workers. If anyone has any idea why they are not growing it would be greatly appreciated.

What temperature are you keeping them at?  He says that he was keeping them at 90 degrees Fahrenheit - are yours being kept at a cool temperature?

That sounds like normal growth, colonies usually get up to about that number, then start fluctuating, and then start to stop growing as it approaches hibernation. Sounds to me like they are doing well.

Ok thanks, this is my first colony so I just wanted to be sure. As for the temperature, I have a heating cable that doesn't have a thermometer, but I'd guess it stays around 90°F

veromesor pergandei hibernate?

v pergandei don't necessarily hibernate like ants from colder climates, but even desert ants slow growth and production during the winter months

yeah I see what you mean. I had a heat wave that lasted a week. around 90s in San Fernando valley. she laid a huge ball of eggs. it's been almost 3 weeks since that heat wave. temp. went down to the 70s. She has not laid one single egg in more than 2 weeks. it's too cold
