Just sharing some pictures of a log formicarium I built. Built a few of these before, and are one of my favorite nests for Camponotus sp. Also, if anyone can tell by the bark, let me know what type of tree it is. Thanks.

Nice!  How will you deal with molding in the wood?

Beautiful! How do you control humidity?

That bark reminds me of a beech tree, though it could belong to some closely related cousin of beech.

I will only be keeping the lower part of it wet. I'm hoping there won't be mold.

I control the humidity with the hole in the middle. I put cotton in there, use a syringe to inject water, and then humidity will spread to the lower part of the nest.

You could also try not moisturizing the nest at all. Since you are keeping Camponotus in there they won't probably need any moisture inside the nest. I don't moisturize nests in which Camponotus sp.

Very cool! How do you ensure they don't squeeze between the glass (or acrylic or whatever the viewing pane is) and the log? And is it held on magnetically?

Perhaps a resin would work to ensure they don't chew through the bark.

Also, would it be possible to show us how you make these or get a picture from directly in front?

I can get a picture from the front, and I would have to do a video for a tutorial. Perhaps in a few weeks when I free up some time.

Looking really good, TC.

I hate to even suggest it because it means I've caught the dang bug then... but it has that (SAME COLORADO CLEAN WOOD FURNISHING THAT EEEEVVVERRRYYYONE HAS) really nice Colorado appeal to it!
