I don't get why species names are still connected to genus names.

Except that in this conflict BOTH side have decent arguments (as both versions when applies purely lead to a loss of information), the problem is just that they're too dumb to agree on the obvious middle ground where the parasite subgenus name consists of the parent genus name and a prefix or suffix.
