Hello all,

These little suckers have been showing up to my blacklight every night since early May; some nights only a couple show up, but some nights there are literally hundreds. I've explored Bugguide and other identification websites to identify them, but I haven't had any luck. I know winged male and female reproductives do exist; I've seen them mate at the light (similar to a nuptial flights!).

I'd like to learn a little more about these. All I know as of now is they make a wonderful protein source for founding ant colonies. :)

They're pretty polydisperse at around 4-7 mm in length each, with the majority falling within 5-6 mm. The large portions of their bodies are shiny jet-black, aside from their thoraxes which are bright red.

Rove beetles.

Thank you! I think I've ID'd it as Philonthus rufulus.
