I am returning to NYC in the first week of September. I was wondering if there will be queens flying during that time or if it will be too late. I live in the suburbs near some parks so I might get lucky with finding a queen. What sepcies would I expect to find during this time?

Lasius neoniger is known to fly around Labor Day. That's all I can think of at the moment.

I just caught two crematogastors in my backyard in the last week, if you are still looking. But I think they may be done now as I went from seeing a few a day to none in the past 5 or so days. With dilligence and some luck you might be able to find one.

I live about an hour north of the Bronx, in a forest on top of a mountain lol.

 

And yea the 'labor day ant' (lasius neoniger).

We used to see the nest near my house fly almost every year during labor day weekend when we used to have parties at my place. Never caught one though as this was before I got into anting, this is my first summer Queen hunting.

Not exactly certain what species are in our area but you may still find some creamtogastor and lasius (As mentioned above), and possibly camponotous, or tetramorium.

Not sure if or what myrmica or solenopsis are around here but they look to be other september flyers.

 

My video meeting for work was cancelled today so I will be going to look for some queens in a few minutes, I will let you know if the backyard yields any results.

Well no luck finding queens but I did turn over a rock and see a nicely sized colony of lasius interjectus or lassius claviger (not sure which.) with alates waiting for the right time to fly.

Could be wrong on the binomial name...

 

They are orange ants that spray citronella-like or lemon-like chemicals when threatened, the odor is pretty strong.

 

But I imagine they would fly in the next week or two after this storm that is passing over us right now.

I know nothing about them and they may be parasitic queens, not certain.
