 North Hollywood California – residential neighborhood

 

Found on June 10^th, 2017 - i have found 2 other queens since then, the last found on July 1st

Dry desert like area
10 mm
Brownish red body and head, with darkening at the end of the gaster. Few hairs on the gaster
Large U shaped mandible, looks like there may be a stinger, looks like 2 nodes on petiole.

 

I am just not sure whether this is Solenopsis xyloni or Solenopsis invicta. They are both found in this area.

Pogonomyrmex californicus! Harvester ants are semi-claustral, make sure to give her a little outworld where you can feed her in.

she is very red, and matches most pictures of both types of fire ant... southern, and imported?

I second Pogonomyrmex californicus, this is definitely not Solenopsis of any species, Pogonomyrmex have much bigger heads, more humped body shape and smaller gaster because they are semi-claustral. Also note the color distance, Pogonomyrmex has a more dull orange, while Solenopsis Invicta has a more darker red and black, Solenopsis xyloni the other hand can look similar to Invicta or a bright orange. Nice find and good luck with your colony!
